Core Meaning
✅ Reactive vs. Proactive: Prioritizing your schedule means shuffling or sorting tasks that have already landed on your calendar or to-do list. Scheduling your priorities means deciding what matters most first and blocking out time for those goals before minor tasks take over.
✅ The “Big Rocks” Principle: Covey uses the metaphor of filling a jar. If you fill it with sand and small pebbles (trivial tasks, emails, minor interruptions) first, the big rocks (deep work, health, family, long-term goals) will not fit. You must put the big rocks in the jar first.
I first encountered the “Big Rocks” principle during a management training workshop with about 28 colleagues.
The instructor started with a simple exercise: Write down the top five things that bring you true joy, fulfillment, or happiness—personally or professionally.
When we charted our answers, the results were staggering. Out of 28 people, absolutely no one was dedicating significant time to what they claimed mattered most.
To drive the point home, the instructor brought out a glass bowl and two buckets of rocks—one filled with large stones, the other with small pebbles. She asked how we could fit everything into the bowl. We tried filling it with small pebbles first, and then mixing them, but nothing worked.
The only solution? Put the big rocks in first, then let the small pebbles fill the gaps.
That demonstration changed my life. Combined with Stephen Covey’s 4 Quadrants, it transformed how I handle stress. The big rocks are your non-negotiables: joy, health, and fulfillment. The pebbles are the daily administrative noise. If you don’t schedule your big rocks first, the pebbles will consume your entire calendar.
I hope this inspires you to look at your calendar today. What is one “big rock” you can schedule right now?
